“It is time to work for a new era of social justice; time to make a radical reassessment of gender equality policies and strategies as part of the construction of this new era of social justice.” This was the concluding message of the Director-General of the ILO on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day last March.
The Centre has a record of almost three decades of capacity building and knowledge sharing on gender equality. Training, information, sensitization, experience sharing, exchange of models and best practices are some of the tools offered by the Centre as a response to the pledge of the international community to the active promotion of human rights, women’s empowerment and gender equality.
The topics that are offered in its first “Gender Academy” – a journey through gender equality to be held on campus from today to 2 December 2011 – will touch upon the ILO’s main strategic objectives including:
- long-standing and most recent ILO standards (Discrimination; Equal Remuneration; Workers with Family Responsibilities; Maternity Protection and the newest Domestic Workers’ Convention);
- analysis of the gender-differentiated trends of employment, unemployment and vulnerable employment, and recommendations for integrating gender concerns into a policy response to the economic crisis in order to promote more productive employment and decent work opportunities equally for women and men;
- the wide spectrum of ILO tools for ensuring gender-sensitive social protection;
- key approaches to gender and social dialogue.
Like never before, now is certainly the time to do what we can to make a difference.
