BRICS Experts Forum at the ITCILO
From 28 to 30 November, the Centre hosted a meeting of the BRICS Network of Labour Research Institutesas part of the BRICS Experts Forum: “Promoting Better Outcomes for Youth in the BRICS and Beyond”.
Together with the ILO, the Centre welcomed representatives of the National Labour Market Observatory of the Ministry of Labour, Brazil; the All-Russia Research Institute for Labour of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, Russian Federation; the V.V. Giri National Labour Institute of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, India; the Chinese Academy of Labour and Social Security of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, China; and the University of Fort Hare and the Ministry of Labour, Republic of South Africa.
First proposed under the Indian presidency in 2016, the BRICS Network of Labour Research Institutes was endorsed by the BRICS Labour and Employment Ministerial Meeting in Chongqing in 2017. The aim wasto implement the resolutions of previous BRICS Labour and Employment Ministerial meetings and enhance cooperation among the countries involved.
At the BRICS Labour and Employment Ministerial Meeting in Durban in August 2018, the ministers present endorsed a partnership with the International Training Centre of the ILO and called upon the ITCILO to support the BRICS Network, including their forum on the theme of youth employment in 2018/19.
In response to this commitment, the Experts Forum has sought to strengthen partnerships and collaboration between the members of the BRICS Network, in conjunction with the ILO and the ITCILO, and to promote knowledge-sharing and opportunities for South-South and Triangular Cooperation, including with developing countries in their respective regions of the world. A key focus of the Expert Forum was on evidence-based policy-making, in particular policies and programmes that are effective in promoting decent employment for young men and women in the BRICS countries.
