Introduction to the course

As an expression of their commitment to the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), States are encouraged to adopt National Action Plans (NAPs) on Business and Human Rights. The engagement of ministries of labour as well as employers’ and workers’ organizations in this process is crucial to reinforce the labour dimension of the busititness and human rights agenda, identify priorities at the national level and concrete policy measures and actions to protect and respect labour rights in business operations, and ensure effective access to remedy to victims of corporate-related human rights abuses.

In this regard, the normative framework and guidance provided by International Labour Standards and instruments such as the Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work and the ILO Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy (ILO MNE Declaration) are critical to ensure respect for labour rights related human rights.
