Introduction to the course

In an increasingly globalised world, which is still based on a large-scale production model, but can no longer ignore its effects on climate change and the most vulnerable populations, the social and solidarity economy represents an effective and positive alternative for the future.

The organisations practising the social and solidarity economy, such as associations, cooperatives, social enterprises, self-help groups and social movements, aim for long-term viability and sustainability and for the transition from informal to formal economy. Operating in all sectors of the economy, they put into practice a set of values intrinsic to their functioning, with respect for people and the planet, and for principles such as equality, equity, interdependence, self-management, transparency and accountability, promoting decent work and dignified living conditions.

This training course, divided into 4 modules, will enable you, through real case studies, to explore in detail the many forms of this phenomenon, which is so varied and diverse from one country to another, but increasingly visible because of its role in creating and maintaining jobs, as well as providing services to local communities.

What will you learn?
  • Understand the definitions and characteristics of the SSE, its different organisational forms, as well as its main values, principles, and legal frameworks.
  • Recognise the reciprocal relationship between the SSE and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Analyse how SSE can be a good model for promoting decent work and how it can contribute to meeting the challenges related to the future of work.
