The Summer School was a formative early career experience. It was fantastic to gain practical insight and think about the bigger picture of youth employment and decent work.

Making ends meet

Gertrude describes her job as rewarding yet challenging. It can be difficult to reconcile the delight of a successful harvest with the reality of the local market.

During these past two months, inputs have been very expensive, the price of fertilizer has increased from 35 to 75 dollars, and even 100 dollars at one time.

Meanwhile, profits remain steady or dip slightly over the seasons. Lately, it has been hard for Gertrude to make ends meet. That’s why the ILO created the Green enterPRIZE initiative. The project seeks to address the high levels of youth employment, low levels of formal and growth-oriented enterprises, and unsustainable production processes prevalent in small- and medium-sized enterprises in Zimbabwe. Through an annual competition, the ILO hopes to identify green, growth-oriented enterprise owners from all over the country. The prize? Technical and business development support from the ILO’s strategic partners. Long term, this plan will strengthen sustainable practices in small businesses, and make the case for Zimbabwe to go green.

Ethics, Accountability and Transparency

The Centre is committed to transparency and accountability throughout its operations.

The Ethics Officer of the ILO works independently and aims to foster a culture of integrity within the organization, including the ITCILO.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Consultation. Upon request, the Ethics Officer provides confidential guidance to Human Resources Services, as well as individual managers and staff members, to ensure that all policies, procedures, and practices adhere to ethical standards. However, the Ethics Officer does not receive reports of misconduct nor resolve grievances in cases of conflict.
  • Promotion. The Ethics Officer works with Human Resources Services to design and promote programmes that increase staff members’ awareness of ethical issues. All staff comply with the Standards of Conduct for the International Civil Service, as well as other documents regarding duties and procedures.
  • Whistleblower protection. If a staff member believes that action has been taken against them for reporting misconduct or cooperating with an audit or investigation, the Ethics Officer conducts a fair and transparent preliminary review. If necessary, the Ethics Officer refers the case to Human Resources Services for disciplinary action.

Martin Oelz serves as Ethics Officer of the ILO since 1 February 2016. He can be reached at:
