The Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) aims to establish a common understanding of the ways in which businesses can contribute through their activities to the realization of decent work and the role different actors can play in promoting responsible and sustainable business practices, including through human rights due diligence.

Human rights due diligence (HRDD) allows enterprises to uphold their responsibility to respect human rights as outlined in the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the ILO Tripartite Declaration of Principles concerning Multinational Enterprises and Social Policy (MNE Declaration) and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises on Responsible Business Conduct. It consists of a process by which companies can identify, prevent, and mitigate their actual and potential adverse impacts on human rights and account for how they address such impacts.

The MOOC “Human Rights Due Diligence and Decent Work” will highlight how principles of international labour standards relate to company operations, how those principles can be most effectively promoted and implemented, the role of governments and businesses, and how employers’ and workers’ organizations can guide and support such practices. It will also include a session on addressing specific decent work issues in economic sectors through a human rights due diligence processes, highlighting concrete examples, experiences and good practices.

The MOOC targets a broad group of professionals from the public and private sectors (business, government, social partners and other stakeholders). In particular, RBC and HRDD practitioners, government officials working at the interface of trade, investment and human rights issues, employers' and workers' organisations, business support services, civil society and academia, and other stakeholders.

By the end of this MOOC, participants will:

• Strengthen their knowledge on international labour standards, including the Fundamentals Principles and Rights at Work, for more effective HRDD processes;
• Learn about trends, challenges and opportunities in human rights due diligence to advance decent work;
• Learn about specific guidance and good practices in human rights due diligence in support of decent work in various economic sectors;
• Explore practical approaches to help small and medium enterprise (SMEs) with their RBC and human rights due diligence practices.

The training will be offered in English (with available interpretation in French and Spanish) and will be delivered through eCampus, the online training platform of the International Training Centre of the ILO (ITCILO).

It will include the following elements:

• 6 webinars of 2 hours each (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 2pm – 4pm CEST) in English with live interpretation in French and Spanish. The recording of the webinars will be uploaded on the eCampus.
• a discussion forum for networking and exchange of experiences available in English, French and Spanish
• 8 self-guided thematic learning modules available in English, French and Spanish
• a certificate of participation for participants who successfully complete the course

The course will have a duration of 2 weeks. The estimated workload for this MOOC is 9 hours (maximum) per week and participants can complete the proposed activities at their own pace.

Participation in the course is free of charge. Upon completion of the six compulsory eLearning self-guided modules and one of the two optional modules, and after passing the final test, participants will receive a Certificate of Participation from the ITCILO.
